Objectices and Disciplines

Acta Zoobot Austria is a single-blind peer-reviewed scientific journal that publishes papers from biological (botanical, mycological, zoological) research, considering articles focusing on phylogeny, biosystematics and morphology as well as ecology, biogeography, physiology, biochemistry and genetics from all areas of Eukaryota. This also includes faunistic and taxonomic work as well as methodological, historical, scientific-theoretical topics and related research areas relevant to biological research.

The categories of articles to be published are original research articles, short communications and review articles.

The journal is divided into the following sections:

  • Biology. Scientific articles from the fields of zoology, botany, mycology and related peripheral disciplines are published here.
  • Announcements. Scientific discussions and correspondence, biographies, anniversaries, obituaries, book reviews, abstracts of specialist conferences, excursion reports, association and annual reports of the Zoological-Botanical Society in Austria as well as conference announcements or special faunistic/floristic discoveries/short news items are published in this section.

In addition to regularly published volumes, monothematic or special issues of Acta ZooBot Austria are published with the help of guest editors.

Guidelines for Authors

Editorial Principles

Without prejudice to the rights and assumptions in the preceding guidelines for authors, the ‚Zoologisch-Botanische Gesellschaft in Österreich‘ as well as the editors and authors of Acta ZooBot Austria follow the “Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing” of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). The guidelines can also be downloaded HERE.

The journal Acta ZooBot Austria is committed to maintaining the integrity of research and its presentation by adhering to the rules of good scientific practice. Ethical misconduct will be reviewed on the basis of the COPE guidelines and, if necessary, punished after contacting the authors:

  • By rejecting the publication during the review process, and
  • if publication has already taken place, by a clear written statement/correction in the next or one of the subsequent issues, up to and including withdrawal of the publication by the journal (and the corresponding notification to the international databases and referencing services).

The journal Acta ZooBot Austria also reserves the right to use suitable plagiarism software to check manuscripts. The papers should be original works (avoidance of text recycling or “self-plagiarism”), but in the case of extensions to earlier works, the reuse of material must be transparent and comprehensible. No data, texts or theories by other authors may be presented as if they were the author’s own (“plagiarism”).

Salami slicing/publishing techniques must also be avoided. A single study must not be split into several parts just to increase the number of submissions to one or more journals.

Furthermore, authors are obliged to correct errors as soon as they discover a significant error or inaccuracy in their published article.

Conflicts of interest and possible bias must be disclosed, such as research funding and financial support from companies.

Legal regulations/permits for animal experiments and collections must be complied with.

History of Acta ZooBot Austria

Acta ZooBot Austria is published by the “Zoological-Botanical Society in Austria”. The journal was originally first published in 1851 under the title “Verhandlungen des Zoologisch-Botanischen Vereins in Wien” and is one of the most traditional scientific biological journals in the world. The journal was renamed “Verhandlungen der kaiserlich-königlichen zoologisch-botanischen Gesellschaft in Wien” in 1858, “Verhandlungen der Zoologisch-botanischen Gesellschaft in Wien” in 1919 and “Verhandlungen der Zoologisch-Botanischen Gesellschaft in Österreich” again in 1978. Since 2014 it has been called “Acta Zoobot Austria”. In its more recent history, the “Acta” has been dedicated to an annual focus topic, but also offers space for general zoological-botanical-mycological papers and, since 2015, for the conference proceedings of the ABOL initiative (Austrian Barcode of Life). The journal has existed as a continuous series since its first publication in 1851.
