Hybridvortrag: „Towards an integrative approach to collection-based systematics: examples from research on Myriapoda (Arthropoda) in the Natural History Museum Vienna“
Referentin: Nesrine Akkari (NHM Wien)
Natural history collections are a treasure trove for scientific research and innovation, providing a long-term resource to study the diversity of nature and the evolution of our planet. They are repositories of millions of preserved labelled specimens, including rapidly disappearing or even extinct species. Well curated and preserved collections are of prime importance to address various scientific questions, and natural history museums are unique spaces for interdisciplinary research and innovation. As a taxonomist working on Myriapoda (Arthropoda), Nesrine Akkari highlights the importance of taxonomy as an independent research, yet vital for all other disciplines. Then, based on examples from own research, Nesrine Akkari illustrates how the taxonomic research can be reinvented as an active discipline transcending the simple act of naming organisms when multidisciplinary and integrative approaches are applied.
